About CONSCIOUS COMPANY

CONSCIOUS COMPANY, founded in 2014 by Maren Keeley and Meghan French Dunbar, is the first print and digital, nationally distributed publication in the US to focus solely on sustainable business and business as a force for good. Based in Boulder, Colorado, the publication first hit stands nationwide in January 2015. With four issues in 2015 and moving to a bi-monthly production schedule in 2016, the publication has quickly become a leading source of information for and about sustainable businesses.

By leveraging the power of storytelling and great design, we aim to broaden the conversation about using business as a force for good. We believe that a new definition of success in business is emerging — a definition that is motivated by a growing dissatisfaction with the "status quo," an overall shift towards a values-driven economy, and one that is ultimately centered on a company’s ability to have a positive effect on society and the environment — taking all stakeholders into account — in addition to turning a profit. We want to celebrate these businesses by featuring the stories of companies that operate consciously, by providing their leaders with a megaphone to inspire other businesses to do the same, and by showing the world just how powerful business can be when used in a positive way.

Our Story

Magazine Prep

How we started

This magazine began, as many endeavors do, as a conversation over a meal between two great friends. We were trying to answer the simple question, “Why doesn’t a print magazine about sustainable business exist in the US?” Both of us studied sustainable business in graduate school and felt there was a need for a publication that brought us the latest and greatest from the field in an aesthetically pleasing, beautiful way. Weeks of researching and discussing this question led us to another simple question, “Why not us?,” and, in April 2014, Conscious Company Magazine was born.

Since this time, we have put in countless hours to bring this publication to life, all of the time focusing on how to make a beautiful magazine that inspires people to think about how powerful business can be when used as a force for good. We support these ventures that are making the world a better place by giving them a voice and telling their stories. We stand for large-scale, positive change through innovation, collaboration, courage, and the belief that we can, collectively, do better. We created this magazine to serve these values.

After many months of designing, curating, collaborating, editing, laughing, and believing, the first issue of Conscious Company Magazine was sent to press on December 15, 2014. This inaugural issue hit stands the first week of January 2015 nationwide through Whole Foods and other leading independent retailers. Our story has continued from there and we look forward to getting to know you as our journey continues.

Where are you from?
Born & raised in Chicago, and there have been many journeys along the way. These days I happily split my time between Boulder, CO and Bainbridge Island, WA.

How'd you get to where you are today?
Long story, so I’ll just focus on the highlights. I started cooking professionally when I was 14. I went to Bard for my undergraduate education and earned a dual major in sculpture and philosophy of aesthetics. As you might imagine, I kept cooking… there are not tons of jobs waiting for young graduates with sculpture and philosophy degrees. My work took me from the Hudson Valley to Nantucket to Europe and eventually back to Chicago, then to Boulder. Meghan and I met while working at Slow Money, and about a year later, decided to start Conscious Company. I guess it all comes down to a love of adventure, being OK walking a different path, and trusting my instincts along the way.

Interests/strengths
Cooking, gardening and landscaping, spending time with my dog, running, stand up paddleboarding, yoga, fixing up old furniture, remodeling houses, walking in the woods.

Why do you work for Conscious Company?
Because I believe that business can and should be a force for good. I believe this is where the economy needs to go, and where it is going. I don’t believe we can rely on politics and philanthropy to drive all of the systemic change we need to see, but I believe the private sector can do it much more readily and effectively. Triple bottom line businesses consider the environment and all stakeholders.
Whether looking at things through the lens of resources and our need to be more respectful and conservative overall, or looking at things through the lens of people and the importance of taking care of your customers, your current team, and future talent — businesses that operate this way will not only be more resilient, they will be more profitable too.

What inspires you?
Kindness. Integrity. Generosity. Humility.

Fun facts?
I love power tools.

What gives you hope for the future?
People. Not only young people who want careers that are interwoven with purpose, but customers who are caring more and more about the way products are made, what goes into them, and where they came from.

Where are you from?
Evergreen, CO (yes, it’s as quaint and beautiful as you’re imagining).

How'd you get to where you are today?
An unconditionally loving and supportive family, grit, persistence, curiosity, courage, two degrees I never thought I would use (journalism and English), one degree I did (MBA in sustainable management), a love of Colorado, steadfast encouragement from my husband, family, and friends, some Buddhist philosophy, and a profound love of life and need to make the very most of it.

Interests/strengths
Traveling and adventuring, eating, laughing, being positive, empathy, communication, storytelling, and not taking myself too seriously (like, at all).

Why do you work for Conscious Company?
I believe business is the most powerful force on earth and, when used in a positive way, can make the change that we need to see in the world. I love telling the stories of and celebrating the people and businesses that have the courage to do things differently, try new things, and coordinate their efforts for the benefit of society and the environment. I also love building this business, working with this beautiful team we have created, and showing the world that women can own and operate an impactful, intelligent, mainstream business publication and media company.

What inspires you?
Love. I love love.

Fun facts?
My grandma taught me how to make stained glass windows by hand. My maternal great-grandparents were from Croatia. My dad and I have an amazing secret handshake. If you put a ribbon dancer into my hand, stand back...I just can’t help myself.

What gives you hope for the future?
The reaction that we have received to the magazine so far. The purpose-driven economy has arrived and the up-and-coming generation is demanding that businesses have a higher purpose beyond profit. The heartfelt communications we receive from our readers thanking us for our work and the rapid growth of the publication reaffirms this for me every day.

Where are you from?
I grew up in Florida, on a 12-square-foot barrier island.

How'd you get to where you are today?
Lots of trial and error, LOVE, laughter and mountains of student debt.

Interests/strengths
I love learning; I’m a research addict. If I’m going to do something, I want to learn all about it first. My strength comes from my family. My husband and my children are the reasons I do anything.

Why do you work for Conscious Company?
I truly believe in what we are doing. I am profoundly proud of the stories we tell and the way we are helping make a change in the way business is perceived and done.

What inspires you?
Kindness inspires me. It’s a beautiful, contagious force.

Fun facts?
I used to work in film and television in Los Angeles and know all kinds of dirt and secrets, so much that I’ve signed millions and millions of dollars worth of confidentiality agreements.

What gives you hope for the future?
My children give me hope for the future. Not only are they a direct mirror being held up in front of me to make sure I continually change and evolve for the better, but they are literally part of the collective future, that will hold the power to fight the good fight and help make the world a better place. I know, a lot of pressure to put on babies!

Where are you from?
Sollentuna, outside of Stockholm, Sweden. I moved to the US at the age of 22 and now I live in Fort Collins, CO. I call both places “home.”

How'd you get to where you are today?
Design has always been a part of my life, and I went to a high school focusing on fine arts and art history. I found that my favorite art medium was print, but didn’t know where to go with it. I took a few years off after high school, until I found that graphic design was something I wanted to explore more. While searching for design schools, I met my husband (who is American) and decided to come over to the States, where I attended the Art Institute in Denver. My first design job out of college was with a magazine, and I love the process of “making a magazine.”

Interests/strengths
Music, design, remodels, and family time. I am a music junkie, and I am always searching for new things to listen to. I always look for inspiration in design in all shapes and forms. If I didn’t do graphic design, I would be an interior designer. I love to makeover spaces, find the potential and make it pretty. I also spend a lot of time chasing my sons around, watching them play sports, taking them skiing and exploring. I stay calm and focused when things get stressful, and always try to keep a positive attitude.

Why do you work for Conscious Company?
I had the chance to be part of the magazine from the beginning and shape the look and identity from start, which has always been a dream of mine. I love that I have flexible work hours that work with my crazy schedule of raising two sons, and I never fret a Monday because my job is fun! I work with a group of amazing people who are excited about their mission and extraordinarily driven.

What inspires you?
Music, design all around me, colors, nature.

Fun facts?
I have lived in the States for 16 years, and I have yet to eat a peanut butter and jelly sandwich or a corn dog.

What gives you hope for the future?
My kids. People who are open to change. Getting older, knowing what I want in life, and not being afraid of it.

How'd you get to where you are today?
I fell in love a bunch of times. With writing, with adventures in the wilderness and outdoor leadership, with the western US in general and Colorado in particular, with helping others tell their stories as clearly and forcefully as possible, with connecting to my deeper self and helping others do the same. And with my husband, who’s supported all these adventures and passions. Also, I worked hard and got very, very lucky.

Interests/strengths
I love yoga, backpacking, vegan food, science experiments, board games, riding bikes, reading, and having no plans. I’m good at being unfashionably sincere, eventually figuring out how to say what I mean, explaining complicated ideas in a simple way, remembering facts, suggesting ways to improve the system, harnessing technology to do my bidding, jumping to conclusions, and big hugs.

Why do you work for Conscious Company?
I couldn’t resist the chance to let meaning and purpose rule my life. It’s been one of the best decisions I ever made.

What inspires you?
Watching people nurture their unique skills and vulnerabilities to wholeheartedly contribute to the human experience. That often takes the form of creative works like poems, books, songs, etc.

Fun facts?
I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 11. Also there’s a story about me in one of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books.

What gives you hope for the future?
The fact that everyone who hears about this magazine and what it stands for wants to do everything in their power to help make our vision of the world come to life. That includes myself — I quit a great job to join this team and I know if the purpose is strong enough to sway me out of my inertia, fear, and resistance, it’s strong enough to sway the world.

How'd you get to where you are today?
Love, humor, and other people cooking for me.

Interests/strengths
Extended travel, biomimicry, biking, hiking, Pilates, all things music, caffeine, eastern philosophy, spaghetti westerns, baking from scratch, learning how to night scuba...eventually
Idiosyncrasy, honesty, creativity, communication

Why do you work for Conscious Company?
I’m fascinated by the power of storytelling to challenge skepticism, dissolve ignorance, and inspire disparate groups to connect and collaborate. Dedicating my strengths and passion to a media publication that is tackling one of the most complex narratives of the 21st century through storytelling — how we continue to maximize and flourish when faced with limited resources — is a privilege and honor.

What inspires you?
Systems thinking for social change, cities, the informal economy, power posing, polyglots, John O’Donohue, Majora Carter, Brian Eno, Beyonce, Pema Chodron, and the brilliance, creativity, and generosity of my friends and family!

Fun facts?
Pretty sure the only sports competition I ever won was the Hoola Hooping Olympics in 5th grade where I BROKE THE RECORD at 6 minutes before they cut me off.

What gives you hope for the future?
Neuroplasticity. Also love, humor, and people cooking for each other.
